Download & Installation
System Requirements
- Device: iPad. Gaze interaction requires ARKit Face Tracking support. Gaze interaction relies on the front-facing TrueDepth camera system. If your device lacks TrueDepth support or camera permissions are denied, you can use the app in Touch Mode.
- Operating System: iPadOS 18 or later.
- Network: Internet access is required for AI suggestions, live weather context, quota tracking, and subscription verification. Preset phrases, custom content, Pinyin input, touch interaction, and system speech synthesis operate completely offline without AI.
TIP
If you are unsure whether your iPad model supports eye tracking, simply install and launch the app. If face tracking hardware is unavailable, the app will automatically prompt you to proceed with Touch Mode.
How to Get the App
Talking Eyes is available on the App Store: Download Talking Eyes.
Open the store page on your iPad and tap "Get" to install. For help, see Support.
Initial Launch
When launching the app for the first time, a 8-step onboarding guide ("Welcome to Talking Eyes") walks you through initial configuration:
- Overview: Understand large four-quadrant gaze selection and system speech synthesis, with full touch support.
- Camera & Eye Tracking: Review eye-tracking privacy and grant front-camera access (or continue in Touch Mode).
- AI Suggestions Consent: Review third-party data sharing disclosures and choose whether to enable AI (selecting "Not Now" skips Steps 4–6 and proceeds to Step 7 (Expression Content), then Step 8 (Device Placement)).
- Configure User Profile: Fill in age, environment, medical/nursing limits, and keywords (only when AI is enabled).
- Audio Context Permissions: Optionally grant Microphone and Speech Recognition access for caregiver voice context (only when AI is enabled).
- Location Context Permission: Optionally grant Location access for venue and weather context (only when AI is enabled).
- Expression Content: Learn about editable categorized expressions (up to 64 phrases) and frequent phrases (up to 16), available under "Settings → Expression Content".
- Device Placement Assistant: Secure the iPad in landscape on a stable mount, centered, and 40–70 cm away.
After completing setup, the app enters the main flow. If camera access is granted, the app automatically detects the user's face and guides you through 6-point gaze calibration; if in Touch Mode, you proceed directly to the home screen. For complete details, see First-time Configuration.
